In July, Global Deaf Research Institute began early-stage research on the experiences of deaf refugees and connected with the World Institute on Disability while advancing partnerships with the World Federation of the Deafblind and the International Federation of Hard of Hearing People. The organization also planned its next national deaf needs assessment in the Dominican Republic for March and celebrated a $1,098 SF Marathon fundraiser led by community runner Zamica Gage.

Assessment of the Quality of Life and Communication Needs of Deaf Ecuadorians

Based on interviews with 36 deaf and hearing participants across Ecuador, GDRI's all-deaf research team found that systemic exclusion from education and employment, limited access to interpreters and assistive technology, and gaps in family and institutional support shape deaf Ecuadorians' health and quality of life. The peer-reviewed study, published in the European Journal of Investigation in Health, Psychology and Education, argues these barriers stem from structural failures rather than deafness itself, calling for policy investment in accessible education, healthcare, and community-based support.
